Our latest Amed IDC on Bali produced what we think is a first in the world – an Instructor Development Course on a shaking ground when we ran our PADI IDC in Amed, Bali in October 2017 under the shadow of the rumbling Mount Agung!!
the shadow of Mount Agung
We won’t be able to write a few words about the Amed IDC without talking about Agung! Amed is not in the danger zone but it still sits on what seems to be the foothills on Mount Agung – we have two views, either the beach and open sea or the volcano that seems to loom up over us!
That volcano has been keeping us busy over the last two weeks. On day one, Mount Agung was on alert three…and on day four, it moved up to level four…and there is no level five! It says it all!
An IDC is already pretty intense, you can now imagine the intensity that our program took when it turned out to be a level four IDC!! Doing presentations on a shaking ground, being in Open Water removing and replacing a mask on the sound and the feeling of the tremors…what a new sensation for all.
A few sleepless nights, every morning we all woke up looking at that big volcano behind our classroom, wondering when that thing will blow.
Did we had a laugh, oh yes we did. Was it hard sometimes, yes it was. Did our Platinum Course Director Marie drained herself by putting every bit of energy she had in order to make sure we could forget a bit about that big mountain? Yes she did.
Most importantly is that everyone keept their head up and they went through the program with flying colours. Our Instructor Development Program has just ended a two days ago with another 100% passing rate…and lot’s of adrenaline.
Keep our Focus on the Amed IDC
With such a strong group representing 6 different countries around the world, we did manage to focus.
We had a resort for ourselves, and we were lucky because Amed is a paradise for the IDC – a massive pool for confined presentation, a perfect sandy slope right in the front of the dive centre for our Open Water presentations and on top of that the amazing team from the dive centre.
ABC & CNN not interested!
On 1 day of the program, coming back from a dive for Deep Specialty Instructor, journalists from ABC as well as CNN was waiting for us for a few questions. We bet you already guess that we never made it on their news later on…we were way too positive by saying that life had to continue, that we were happy to stay in Amed in order to support the local businesses. We were prepared in case of any emergency and carried on our program with fantastic days and nights.
IE success
On 4 October our 6 New Instructors received their certificate of completion after having completed most likely the most relaxed IE we ever joined!! In fact, the IE was nothing compare to the 2 weeks on the shaking ground!
Andrea, Bruno, Csaba, Phil, Satu and Tim will be representing us really well in Indonesia, Thailand or what ever they will go to begin their careers.
What a great time it was and we have to say it, that IDC has been the moment for creating new link with people. We became a family and I am sure we will meet again. Ok guys, it was fun, but no need to have a Volcano next door just for the fun of finding ourselves back into the same ambiance! Much love and looking forward to catch up with each one of you.
