A few of our guests were lucky enough to witness baby Flamboyant Cuttlefish hatching in Lembeh this week! Their eggs were first discovered a week prior and a few dedicated guests and guides returned time and again before finally witnessing the big event! As if it’s not incredible enough to watch the juveniles squirm about inside their eggs, to see them shift color just moments before pushing through the egg must be truly incredible! Once out of the egg, the teeny-tiny Flamboyant Cuttlefish remained brightly colored as it sought out its first meal on the reef…
A case of “mistaken identity” sent a bit of excitement through the Two Fish Lembeh resort this week. One boat of divers reported to the second boat of divers that they had seen the Melibe colemani nudibranch. The Melibe colemani is an exceedingly rare sight in Lembeh Strait and is a highly prized find amongst Nudi lovers. Our afternoon boat immediately went back to the same sight and located the Nudi. Though it was indeed a Melibe, it did not turn out to be the colemani this time around. The Melibe colemani is known for its rather stringy and transparent appearance. The lesser known Melibe engeli also takes on a transparent look, which can easily lead to mistaken identities.
Other exciting sightings at Two Fish Lembeh this week include Halemida Ghostpipefish and Mototi Octopus. Halemida Ghostpipefish perfectly mimic the Halemida alga that they live near and are one of the lesser seen Ghostpipefish in the Strait. The Mototi Octopus has a single blue ring on each side, though it is not quite as vibrant as the more commonly encountered Blue Ringed Octopus. However, what the Mototi lacks in color it makes up for in rarity, which in Lembeh Strait is one of the most highly sought after traits…
