In Belongas, South Lombok this week we have had one of the most pure natural experiences with the Banded Sea Snake (Laticauda Colubrine), showing off their elegance, flexibility and outstanding hunting skills. Although extremely venomous, the banded sea snake has no interest in us divers what so ever. Their food of choice is mainly eels and small fish which we have an abundance of here in Belongas!
Jessica from Germany, Adam from Canada and Yemi from U.K were engrossed in the topography of the dive site when suddenly they noticed 5-6 banded snakes leaving the reef up to the surface, back down again then slithering along the reefs with heads in holes looking for food. This went on for most of the dive. What a lucky encounter to have had they all say. It is rare to see so many sea snakes together but they have been known to keep in groups.
Beside the banded sea snakes Yemi was delighted to see for the very first time a group of Mobula rays. He has travelled far and wide in search of rays and cannot put into words the feeling he had when finally came face to face with them. Along with the Mobula trays the divers this week saw Eagle Rays, Tuna, Barracuda, White Tip Sharks, plenty of nudi branch and the vibrant red tooth triggerfish.
Our dear old friend Seonka who joined us here in south Lombok for 6 weeks has arrived back home in Germany safe and sound. He has been updating us with the progress of his hammerhead tattoo; he is currently in search of an artist. We here cannot wait to see the end result!!
