Dive Site of the Month: Batu Putih
Our not so rainy season continues here in South Lombok, giving us some lovely diving conditions for this months featured dive site, Batu Putih. Located at the southeast point of Gili Rengitt, Batu Putih is a favourite dive site for myself and many of our guests as it offers easy diving between 5m and 15m. Batu Putih is home to some of the most diverse and rich coral cover in the “Secret Gilis” of South Lombok.
Meaning “white stone” in English, Batu Putih is far from white underwater, with a multitude of hard and soft corals providing a dive that is very colourful as well as being the habitat for a variety of fish and macro critters. It’s not uncommon to see many species of nudibranch and other sea slugs munching their way across the reef here as well as green and hawksbill sea turtles and even the occasional white tip reef shark cruising by.
Our dive guides Mun, Ipan, Edi and Hirman have eagle eyes that can always find something extra special for aspiring macro photographers. Many tiny species of crab and cleaner shrimp can be found nestling amongst the anemones and sea urchins at this dive site and if you’re lucky they may find one of our many species of pipefish for you (see image above). In our not so rainy low season we’re experiencing lovely warm waters around 26-29c and 10m – 15m visibility. Compare that to our high season conditions of 28-30c and 15-20m visibility and you begin to wonder why people bother to dive less exotic waters when they could be enjoying all year round diving here.
The warm weather and occasional rain shower have given Two Fish Divers South Lombok (AKA The Dive Farm) a very green, tropical feel this week which has given our new litter of puppies some lovely spaces to play in. It has also given me a new skill to develop… puppy repair(!) as the rough tumble between the 3 brothers Snap, Crackle and Pop got a little more rough than tumble leaving little Snap with a sore head that needed bandaging… he now looks very silly but even more adorable with this seasons new “headwear for puppies”. Life is certainly never dull here in South Lombok!
