Be a diver, unless you can be a dolphin… Then always be a dolphin in Bali! We’ve been hearing them underwater, we’ve been seeing them on the surface, but we have never seen them underwater yet. Underwater they are so quick, they are so smart and the regular pod of dolphins that live around the islands Nusa Lembongan, Ceningan and Penida have been avoiding divers all the time. This week a new pod came to Bali and it has been amazing. They have been breaching the surface, seemingly playing around for hours and giving us sneak previews of what it would be like to spot dolphins in Bali underwater.
When we saw them on the surface with our guest Salli and we joked about seeing them underwater, but I told Salli that it was very unlikely. Salli has been traveling for a while already and was lucky enough to spot some dolphins underwater earlier on her trip. Jokingly she said ‘well maybe I’m going to be your lucky charm today!’. And yes, she was, she was my lucky charm! While we were looking for Molas in Gammat Bay, Nusa Penida, we spotted the pod of dolphins, swimming overhead. It was such a beautiful encounter with crystal clear water, an awesome coral reef wall underneath us and such a large pod of dolphins swimming past. I still can’t believe it really happened. In the video you can hear Salli and me laugh, we laugh so hard, because like she predicted, she was my lucky charm.
After a couple of days went by, Gail came to dive with me. We dived Tulamben, spotted the bumphead parrotfish, a million nudis, and some cute jawfish. The next day we took a day trip to Nusa Penida. The first dive in Penida was at Manta Point, very cold but also had so many beautiful manta rays flying by. For the second and third dives we dived in Crystal Bay. When we arrived in the bay, the pod of dolphins was playing around at the surface and teasing the divers and snorkellers with their presence, disappearing to the other side of the bay as soon as people jumped in the water. During the third dive, Gail and I decide to go for a swim to the other side of the bay, feeling lucky. And yes! We start crossing the bay in the blue and at that moment the pod passes us overhead! We were so lucky! With butterflies in our stomachs, we continued the dive. As soon as we got to the other side of the reef we couldn’t believe our eyes, we were in dolphin heaven. The dolphins are on the surface, they passed us very closely, we saw them rubbing themselves on the corals, and at one moment they swam towards us so fast that I believed that they were going to run into us! How lucky! So blessed, so lovely, it was amazing. There are no more words to describe this experience. Amazing.
