Change can be hard but positive this is the beginning of beach beautification in Gili Air. The local government is beginning to enforce a change that most of the locals where aware of but it was only a matter of time. In the Gili’s they have been removing all buildings, restaurants, and shops on the beach side surrounding the island. They want to bring back the beauty and beaches that the Gili Islands are known for. We love this little Island above and Below the surface so we concern ourselves with both environments. What happens above the water also effects us below the water. I will say it is lovely sitting at a wooden table on the beach with your toes in the sand and ordering a cold Bintang but I can understand the appeal to bring the beaches back. The beaches were lined with all sorts of establishments that left no beach to be enjoyed. It will be a long hard process to restore the beaches to what they once looked like but as I said change can be positive. It was heart breaking seeing our neighbors businesses being relocated and removed but I keep reminding myself of the long term effects this change will have on beach beautification.
“Don’t be afraid to change. You may lose something good but you may gain something better.” The picture is our current view from our office here in Gili Air. Not a bad view right? We intend to do all we can to keep this place beautiful. Check our facebook for update photos as the process continues or come join us at Dive Zone for an afternoon beach clean up and a cold Bintang as a reward for all your hard work. We love Gili Air above and below the surface, lets show it.
