Spotting a box fish will make you day. Their amazing shape and their goofy swimming habits will put a smile on anyone’s face. Here in Gili Air we have all different types, species, and sizes of box fish. They are easily recognized due to their distinct shape they look like little swimming cubes. The box fish is very skiddish, hard to spot, and even more challenging to capture a photo. Their odd shape and hard bone structure make them inedible for most other fish so predators beware. The box fish also secretes a toxin when they feel threatened that can kill surround predators and sometimes even themselves.

The Juvenile box fish capture here in this photo was smaller than a 100 Indonesian Rupiah coin but can grow up to 15 cm. As the box fish ages into adulthood they change into a completely different color although they maintain their unique shape. This week in Gili Air we spotted this juvenile box fish along side the bounty wreck. It is easy to get distracted by the beautiful colors and corals of the wreck but this one grabbed our attention from underneath a table coral. This week Instructor Scuba Sal welcomes Liz and Mitch two pals from the England into the underwater world. The two extremely tall friends started off as self proclaimed, “baby giraffes” but by the end of the courses were Fun Diving like pros with our guide Tino. Instructor Mermaid Meg finished an Open Water Course with Francis also from the England typically spends his time as a photographer above the water but we maybe have changed his perspective. Instructor Kuss has been busy with local Discover Scuba Divers eager to see the underwater world for the first time.
