One of the strangest looking fish in the sea must be the humphead or bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum). The largest of the Parrotfish family (it really is huge!), this herbivore is identified by its beak-like teeth that it uses for scraping food from the reef – and in this particular species, it’s strange “bump-like” forehead. You will often see bumphead parrotfish swimming together in large schools and like all Parrotfish, the bumphead parrotfish is incredibly important to the health of the reef. Did you know that the bumphead parrotfish is under threat from overfishing and increasing pollution? We are extremely fortunate to see good numbers of Bumphead parrotfish at our dive sites here in Sekotong!

This week at Two Fish Divers South Lombok was a busy one with daily trips to Belongas Bay to look for the Hammerheads and schools of Mobula Rays as well as some local diving for our visiting Vikings from Kingfish Denmark. On the training front we had the pleasure of teaching PADI Discover Scuba Divers, refreshers and a PADI Open Water Course in Sekotong.

We do things a little different here in South Lombok because we don’t use a swimming pool for our courses! This is a huge plus for our PADI Divers who get to jump straight into the ocean! We do our confined water sessions at a dive site called “The Sands” where we get to see all sorts of cool little critters. Instructor Kate taught the PADI Open Water Course this week where they saw a double-ended pipefish, a seahorse, many different starfish and clownfish! What more could you want while you wait for your fellow students to accomplish their skill practices!? Fast forward to open water dive number four of the course, the magical final dive of the PADI Open Water Course… Most of the skills are already complete and you get to explore a bit more of our beautiful sites. Kate has become slightly superstitious about open water dive four. For the last few courses she has taken students to a dive site called “Sunken Island” where, near the end of these dives, they shallow up to do the last couple of skills and… low and behold, they have seen bumphead parrotfish! It’s now customary for us to take our students to this site for their last dive in hopes of spotting these goofy looking giants.
