What another great week spent at Two Fish Resort, Bunaken. It was a steady stream of new challenges for me this week. After assisting several Open water and Advanced courses I had the opportunity to assist with a Discover Scuba Diving course. I was another step closer to finishing my dive master course.
Conducting the DSD was such an amazing experience. Discover Scuba Diving allows uncertified divers to go diving with a PADI professional. The course gives you basic underwater skills with a quick workshop with an instructor then you are ready to plunge into the ocean. This course was so much fun because the student had such a great time, he will no doubt become a certified diver eventually.
This week was the first time I had the pleasure of guiding students in Bunaken! After students have done skills with the instructors on the open water dives, I was able to then lead the guided portion of the dives. It can be quite intimidating the first time, I felt obliged to find some interesting marine life. Luckily for me open water students find everything interesting. We also have dives with literally a countless amount of turtles. This makes guiding easier and always fun.
In the afternoons I have been spending my time practicing my skills circuit. This involves 24 skills I have to perform at a demonstration level. I’ve been very lucky to have 4 different instructors to learn from. I have blended my favorite parts of their demonstration styles to suit my own. I feel very confident for when I have to do my final skills circuit test.
At the end of another week in Bunaken. I feel like more of an asset to the team. I’m giving dive and boat briefings for new guests, fitting their equipment and welcoming them to the resort. Im more comfortable with all the staff, who are some of the nicest people. We have had a busy week with a full resort, everyone has banded together and worked very hard to make it a great experience for the guests.
It is such a great feeling seeing guests so happy while they are here. The resort has contains guests from all different walks of life. From solo 500+ divers, diving families, social groups and backpackers learning diving for the first time. It is truly a melting pot of cultures and a great place to do my DMT.
