We now have an Olympus TG-5 with a YS-03 Sea & Sea Strobe available for rental on your arrival in Lembeh. This means you can get some fantastic photos of your stay in Lembeh without having to purchase a camera yourself before arrival!
The Olympus TG-5 is a fantastic compact camera and very popular among underwater photographers. It is incredibly simple and intuitive to use, with dedicated underwater modes such as wide angle and macro mode and also a microscope mode. Being such a small and simple camera it does not skimp on quality and it provides some fantastic footage.
Couple this camera with the reliability and quality of a Sea & Strobe and you’ve got yourself a very powerful package.
To help with setting everything up we have a few pointers on how to use this set up.
Choosing which mode to shoot on is a very simple decision. The camera has built in dedicated underwater modes which have an auto colour correction so you don’t need to worry about white balance!
The main underwater settings include:
Snapshot – For shallow areas with plenty of ambient light.
Wide – For any landscape shots or for any subject which is larger than a dinner plate
Macro – Dedicated macro mode for getting up close to the small and special critters of Lembeh
There is one other main photo mode which we recommend giving a try and that is the incredibly powerful Microscope mode. This microscope mode lets you get incredibly close to small critters and has a very strong zoom function which picks out extreme detail on even the smallest creatures such as Pygmy Seahorses!
Beware that this mode doesn’t have any auto colour correct so proper positioning of the strobe is a must in order to get the best shots. Or alternatively if you have your own simple photo editing software then this can bring the true colours back into the photo.
As well as all these functions there is a very good HD video mode which also has an automatic underwater filter resulting in some gorgeous images. A lot of people overlook the video capabilities but if you have an animal with some charisma such as a Coconut Octopus carrying its shells then a picture doesn’t do justice!
The ease of use of the Sea & Sea strobe makes it no trouble for even the most amateur of underwater photographers. It has one button, on and off and the camera does the rest!
