Blue Ring Octopus in Ghost Bay
Our guest Karen had a beautiful Christmas present from the ocean this week. Well, it was a bit before Christmas but who really cares. It was amazing and close enough from Christmas to consider it a present! On one of her last dives (if not the last one!) she has been going to the dive site next to our house reef called Ghost Bay with our dive guide Wis. Ghost Bay is a typical black sand muck dive site where we are often taken by surprise by what we find! Frogfishes, Gurnards, Lionfish, Mimic Octopus, Ghost pipefish, Seamoths … all of these guys are hidden around here if you look hard enough. On this dive, we were totally taken by surprise though by a Christmas encounter with a Blue Ring octopus!!! The Blue ring octopus is extremely beautiful but it is also very dangerous and it carries enough poison to kill a horse.
Fortunately for us, the blue ring doesn’t often bite and it certainly gives a good warning beforehand by flashing it’s bright blue rings. Like most critters of its kind it is very shy and more inclined to heavy camouflage itself than to attack. The blue ring that we found gave Karen plenty of time to enjoy its incredible beauty and even to take a couple of pictures. Wis and Karen had such big smiles on their faces when coming out of the water that we immediately knew we had missed out on a great dive – and right next door to our own Two Fish Amed Resort House Reef!
