Here in Lembeh Christmas Celebration have been in full swing. There won’t be snow in Lembeh this Christmas time. The weather outside may be a bit warmer than some are used to over the Christmas period but that doesn’t stop the guests or the staff getting in the festive spirit.
Last week we had our staff Christmas party where we welcomed family members and residents of the local village into the resort to join in the festivities. Accompanied by a church service for the locals, we followed it up with a party which mixed Indonesian traditional party music with a few Western anthems such as the Macarena! Everyone was up dancing and enjoying themselves and even managed to get up in time for the diving the next day!
On Christmas day itself it was a full day of diving and Santa hats could be spotted under the water as well as some tiny baby frogfish (maybe it was their birthday too!), octopus and hairy shrimps. The good mood could be seen all around the resort with big smiles from everyone involved.
Even the reef was getting in the spirit with ‘Christmas Tree Worms’ in full bloom. Christmas tree worms are a type of Polychaete and come in a variety of different colours which can make for some great photography subjects. Careful not to get too close though as these worms will retract into their tube when they detect too much movement. If you are patient though they will appear again and they look like a flower slowly blooming!
Polychaete worms are incredibly divers with over 10,000 species having been identified! Most of which live harmlessly on the sea floor or on the coral, there is one worm which might surprise you. The Bobbit Worm. This is a polychaete worm and a direct relation to Christmas tree worms! You wouldn’t have thought so at first glance!
