Stenopus hispidus otherwise known as the banded coral shrimp or the banded cleaner shrimp, is abundant here in South Lombok and can be found in warmer waters around the world. Named for it’s red and white stripes, this favourite with photographers can live up to 200+ metres deep but is often found on shallower reefs hiding under ledges where it offers cleaning services to passing fish, cleaning off parasites, dead skin and fungi. In return for cleaner other species (which helps to keep them healthy) the cleaner shrimp receives a free meal in return! This is a beautiful symbiotic relationship which we see regularly at our dive sites around Sekotong.

It’s not just the cleaner shrimp that has spotted Sekotong is a hotspot for a multitude of marine life either – we’ve been having fantastic dives this week with an array of intriguing critters being revealed on every dive. If you prefer bigger fish, that’s not a problem – we have them too! Sekotong’s pristine reefs are among the most productive in Indonesia and you’ll be blown away by the kaleidoscopic colours, swarths of fish and stunning corals!

Trainee Divemasters, Jil and Yann enjoyed spotting numerous critters this week as well as the banded cleaner shrimp in action.  We also had the pleasure of hosting a group from Mataram airport authority plus budding new divers Michal and Lenka who completed their PADI Open Water Course – welcome to our underwater world!!
