This week in Bunaken… What an amazing week we’ve had! The afternoon dives have really rocked this week. Michel from Canada was out on a dive on Bunaken Timor II with divemaster Sandy when a gorgeous devil ray cruised by them almost within touching distance! They were so surprised that Michel only had time to take this one photo before it was gone. We rarely see devil rays here, but it also gave us a reminder to keep an eye out in the blue. Who knows what cruises by when we have our heads in the reef looking for small stuff. Maybe rearview mirrors on the mask can be an idea….

Two days later our tec instructor Dom came out on the afternoon dive to Muka and he also got a big surprise when at depth a beautiful little thresher shark (!!) came in to have a look and then slowly disappeared in to the blue again. Thresher sharks are deep water sharks that occasionally come up to shallow water to get cleaned by various cleaner fish. They are a rare sight here, but it’s great to know they are around. With our massive walls and drop offs here in Bunaken we can only imagine what amazing creatures that live in the deep. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time for when they decide to come up in to the shallows!

You don’t always have to go deep to see something cool though. Sometimes all you need to do is jump in the pool and you have the chance to see a mermaid! 5 year old Marlowe from Canada and her parents and uncle stayed with us for a couple of days this week. While dad and uncle were out diving Marlowe spent most of her time in the pool, more under the water than above! From the age of 8 years kids can start to scuba dive (initially just in the pool) and we hope to see you back here for that, little mermaid!
