These last days we have been lucky enough to spot some amazing spotted eagle rays on some of Amed and Tulamben’s dive sites. Spotted eagle rays are a magnificent specimen of ray which can measure up to 9m long (including the tail). Spotted eagle rays are quite big and love to play in the current where they gracefully swim effortlessly.
When you are diving Bali it is easy to miss these rays as the ‘fly’ by – we are always so busy looking in awe at the reef that we forget to look out to the blue! When we do look out to the blue water and are greeted by spotted eagle rays it can be quite a surprise – but always a good one. Usually, a sighting will cause our Dive Guides to shout into their regulators and wave desperately to attract the attention of the other divers and share the dighting before it’s too late!
Eagle rays are from the family Myliobatidae and look like they are flying in the water. If you have the chance to see a group of spotted eagle rays it literally becomes surreal as you feel like you are watching birds beneath the surface. The spotted eagle rays tail is incredibly long with no sting in the end – and this is one of their most distinctive features. These rays feed on mollusks and crustaceans which they find on the sand. This species lives in relatively shallow water (between just 1m and 30m). Some specimens have been seen at great depths though of up to 300m – but this is an exception.
This week some of our guests at Two Fish Divers Amed Resort have been delighted by this special encounter. Even if we can never guarantee that we will see an eagle ray, the ocean around Bali is always full of surprises and you just never know what might swim passed next!
