Having never dived before I decided to go “zero to hero”, from non-diver to Divemaster, with Two Fish and complete my Divemaster course in Bunaken. Why? Mainly because my dad had always loved diving and from his stories I knew I would too (I also wanted to get away from the miserable British weather), so I swapped England for sunny Sulawesi.
I arrived in Lembeh and did my Open Water Course in October, then it was off to Bunaken to do Advanced, EFR and Rescue, building up to Divemaster. A week ago, I had ticked all the boxes and officially started my Divemaster course.
I came prepared: family who had done their DM told me that I would have a lot of work to do, and they were right. There’s a lot of things to complete for the course as well as being a member of staff and helping out with loading the boat, doing dive site briefings and generally helping customers.
For the past week I have been following the guides to learn how they find critters in the water and how they look after their group. Although I still prefer seeing the larger animals (sorry, Team Lembeh), I’d say it’s more of a challenge to look for the smaller stuff. It also feels like a bigger achievement when you finally find something hidden away. Seeing larger marine life doesn’t require as much skill, it’s more a matter of luck.
So far, every day has been a lot of fun, but what I’ve enjoyed the most is finding out more about the reasons behind the rules of diving as well as developing my skills.
Hi Scott, good to read you are having fun. Hopefully you will join the group to Raja ampat in 2016 then you can show us your skills underwater as we will on the boat, just ask your dad 🙂 !!
Good choice for both…diving and Two Fish
Nice one Scoot!
