After a few days of fun diving and completing his PADI EFR and Rescue course in Bunaken, Tristan has now embarked on his Divemaster course here at Two Fish Divers, which will also take him to our Lembeh resort in a few weeks. Until then, he’s getting to grips with dive logistics, among other things.
The highly enlightening and wonderfully traumatic experience of the Rescue Diver course provided a very clear insight into the mindset needed to approach the Divemaster Internship. Having spent a few days learning that being mauled by panicked divers can be avoided by a calculated and safe approach, that counting too quickly makes a rescue completely exhausting and impossible and that going to the toilet during the rescue course is a tense experience that can be interrupted at worst of moments, I now embark on the Divemaster Internship.
My focus and awareness has started to change with the safety and well being of other divers, as well as myself, becoming a priority. My usual philosophy of Stop or Think or Act is developing into Stop, Think then Act. Skills learnt for Open Water are being relearned and this time with students in mind and that my ability to perform skills must be polished and accurate with all the clear signals to show others the important attributes of each skill. Buoyancy can no longer be almost right, but perfect along with dive techniques. It is exciting to be faced with the new challenges and to know that I am making the next step into the world of scuba diving, learning what goes on behind the scenes, dealing with the logistical issues and becoming an asset and valued addition to a dive.
Unfortunately, I have been surfaced for a few days due to the dreaded sinus block. Thankfully, there is plenty to be done above the waves. My first taste of dive briefing was fun, and observing dives from the boat was an intriguing insight into dive site orientation as well understanding the need for effective planning and organisation of dive groups to ensure safety and efficiency whilst entering and exiting the boat.
