My Divemaster Course in Indonesia
This is going to be the best blog you’ll ever read! ?? hope I managed to capture my experience from my Divemaster Course in Indonesia with Two Fish – here goes ….
As Sebastian the crab said: ‘Darling, it’s better down where it’s wetter, take it from me!’
I made it back! Last year, I began my journey to become a Divemaster in Nusa Lembongan and then Gili Air – I didn’t manage to complete it and promised to come back, telling myself ‘you’ve come this far, don’t waste it!’ Someone back home thought this was a cunning plan to have an excuse to come back! I had my mindset on completing my PADI Divemaster Course in Indonesia so here I am again!
To complete the Divemaster training, I had a few tasks to do including, the skills circuit, mapping, discover local diving and my nemesis the rescue scenario! There have been a few changes to the skills circuit since my last visit – the removal of the skin diving skills, much to my instructor’s dismay! All I will say is that Low-Pressure Inflator hose on my BCD was a pest!
Mapping was my favourite of the remaining tasks I had to do to complete my Divemaster Course in Indonesia, unleashing my primary teacher skills in the illustrations! I also got the chance to update the board outside the shop!
The Discover Local Diving assessment was ‘interesting’! You use an unusual amount of air you’re when on high alert – you don’t want to end up with a missing diver or a situation where someone is out of air! I’ll leave your imagination to run wild here – it probably did happen!
To my complete and utter surprise, the rescue scenario went without any major hiccups – well, apart from nearly scalping my victim, fellow Divemaster Trainee Marcus, during the removal of his BCD! My advice, if you’re considering being an unresponsive diver, tie your hair up! In this instance, I may consider him an ‘unresponsible diver’!
Since being back at Two Fish Gili Air, I have completed my night diving speciality too! The course included navigation – obviously a little disorientating in the dark – and sitting on the seabed for 3 minutes in total darkness! With that completed, I could become a Master Diver! I feel that doing a range of specialities has improved my diving and my knowledge and as PADI says: knowledge is your weapon!
I have been lucky enough to see some awesome critters on this trip, including harlequin shrimp, mandarin fish, cuttlefish, devil stonefish, an abundance of turtles, sharks, nudibranchs the ‘size of your face’ and possibly a once in a lifetime sighting of a blue-ringed octopus – AMAZING! Taking a Divemaster Course in Indonesia is almost guaranteed to deliver incredible marine life.
What I can tell you is, without a doubt, that my Divemaster Course in Indonesia – all of the training – has been one of the most challenging and best things that I have ever done! Thank you to all that have been part of it – from those first dives at Two Fish Nusa Lembongan; to the self-doubt and Tom for talking me round before I was going to quit because I felt out of my depth (literally and metaphorically); the fellow trainees and divers that I’ve laughed with (Jill had some legendary stories to tell) and mostly my instructors in Gili Air. Komang you are a fabulous instructor and helped me improve my confidence. And lastly, Jenny, you’re amazing – thank you for your encouragement, patience, your love of chicken, laughter, and friendship! I have a feeling that the bungee cord may well pull me back to this wonderful island!
