Divemaster Trainee in Bali, Part II
Once the reading has been completed, into the pool we went for the very lengthy skill circuit! Not too bad for a first try at demonstration level apparently! Yay me! I can’t get too complacent though, I need to practice more to make it good enough for exam day!
Another highlight of this week as a Divemaster trainee in Amed is that I went on a night dive on a shipwreck… I had some hesitation because it was my first night dive ever, and just my second dive at this USAT Liberty shipwreck but it was fine – I was positioned at the end of the group to help keep everyone together and we saw a huge school of bumphead parrotfish that were sleeping inside the wreck. That was very cool – fish life is great when you’re chilling inside this kind of setting.
This week I also got the chance (or the unlucky option) to start with the dreaded 15min tread exercise… Every Divemaster trainee must complete this exercise which is set by PADI. We have to be able to tread water for 15 minutes and for the last 2 minutes our hands must be out of the water. I did it but damn, I need to work on my breathing and different kicking styles, flutter style for 15min is hard work!!
Also this week we’ve had lots of fun in the pool or at sea with the crew and team here in Amed and the dive sites are great! I’m not a big fan of muck diving but I’m sure I just have not gotten the hang of it to enjoy it enough, but the house reef wreck, wow! Always something cool to see there!
The dive site the Pyramids, or as the locals call it, 1000 blue-spotted stingray dive site, I love it! Emerald dive site is awesome as well. There are coral structures overgrowing on the concrete or tires base, and the sea life which lives there is amazing!
As for food? Balinese food is excellent, rich in carbs to quickly fill your hunger and easy digestion as well! If you don’t like veggies, rice, noodles or fruits, then the western restaurants are going to be your friend. Oh, and there are mango and coconut trees growing on the side of the road so enjoy it while you can! All in all, another good week as a Divemaster trainee in Bali!
