Bunutan is a very well appreciated drift dive site in the Amed area. “Drift dive” is sometimes a phrase that people are afraid of – but you don’t need to be! When you get used to the current and know how to deal with a drift dive, it becomes a real enjoyment and you start to love it. Drift diving is a more cinematic version of diving. Instead of swimming along a dive site making kicks after kicks to move on, you simply let the current do the job and let it takes you for a tour. It’s effortless – just relax and take it nice and easy.

In Bunutan, which gets its name from the nearby village, we have a wonderful drift dive. It starts shallow on a sandy plateau hosting a large seagrass field. Still sheltered from the current on the bay it’s an ideal place for turtles to feed. As we gain some depth, heading offshore we meet a massive colony of garden eels that are feeding on the plankton passing by. This is where the current picks up and so you start drifting. A bit further along the sloping reef it is packed with soft coral and barrel sponges that offer habitat for many small fishes. There we have a great chance to observe reef sharks and a couple of massive barracudas hunting for prey. Around are also some giant pufferfish and moray eels that are more than happy to hang around this huge food reservoir. Looking into the blue, it’s a dance of fusiliers and snappers schooling around.
