This week we dived Candi Dasa, the place were we often find sharks and occasionally Molas. Conditions look good for the day, the sun is out and the current looks good. We gear up for a dive at Gili Mimpang, the volcanic islands near Candi Dasa. They are called islands (gili) but Mimpang is more like rocks sticking out of the water.
From Padang Bai it’s only 30 minute by boat with an amazing view on mount Agung, gili Mimpang and gili Tepekong. One by one we roll backwards into the water and descend quickly.
The dive site is only done by divers with experience and an advanced certification. The currents can be strong and the dive is deep, but it is worth it! After a few minutes at the bottom two Giant Trevally seem curious and keep swimming around us for a while. We descend further with the wall to our left and the sandy bottom on our right hand side.
We find 2 white tip reef sharks on the sandy bottom, snoozing. They stay where they are, they’re not afraid of divers. When we reach 30 meters we shallow up along the wall, the beauty of the wall amazes everyone and we keep an eye in the blue where loads of schooling fish swim around, along with tunas, trevallies and many more.
We shallow up some more and suddenly feel the current moving the other direction, we’re being pushed in the opposite direction and comfortably fly back to where we came from. During the safety stop we’re still enjoying the schools of fish that surround us, there are too many to count. We are all sad to say goodbye to such an amazing dive site, but it’s time to go up.
Back on the boat we drink tea, talk about what we saw on the dive, and inspect the conditions around Gili Tepekong for our next dive. It’s a good day.
