Ghost Pipefish in Gili Air
If you’re very lucky – or have been diving with a guide with expert eyes – you may have seen ghost pipefish before. Joanne Taylor had the careful eye of our dive guide, Jen, when she was able to capture this striking image of an ornate ghost pipefish in Gili Air at one of our regular dive sites! Why are these little critters so difficult to spot? For starters, they are quite small and often no bigger than your smallest finger. Secondly, like many cleverly adapted sea creatures, they expertly camouflage into their environment. The ornate ghost pipefish is found within the feathery arms of the crinoid (feather star), moving along with those arms in the current. Next time you’re looking at a crinoid, look carefully for something that doesn’t quite fit in with its seahorse-like snout and funny-looking fins!
Things have gotten quieter here on Gili Air, but the weather has much improved! The days have been sunny and hot, and the sea is beckoning us to cool down. We enjoyed some fun diving with the Doran family from Australia at the start of the week; the three of them had a great time diving with Jen!
Joshua had a great time completing his PADI Junior Open Water Course with instructor Jenny. They had a great time in both the pool and the ocean and Jenny says he must be half fish the way he takes to the water! Joshua’s father, Arshad, a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, joined for the ocean dives and is so excited to have a new dive buddy in his young son!
Sebastian and his parents, Karen and Felix, joined instructor Komang for a pool session and two open water dives. Karen and Felix have their PADI Open Water certification but had not been diving in twenty years! Sebastian had never tried SCUBA diving, so they all went together with Komang for a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience. They had a great time diving together and Sebastian loved his first time underwater! An avid photographer, Sebastian looks forward to getting certified so he can take his photography passion to a new level underwater!
Even when we have quiet days, our team is never idle at Two Fish Divers Gili Air! We have been happily working hard to get our dive centre spruced up and better organized. There are always room for improvement, and we will continue to take advantage of dry days to make your experience with us more comfortable!
On Thursday we had our bi-weekly beach cleanup. With the island as quiet (and hot) as it is right now, we didn’t have anyone joining us, but our team was happy to get out there to clean up our beach again!
