Last week Wednesday, I arrived to start my 4 weeks Gili Air Divemaster Internship. After my arrival, I went to the dive shop where I met George and my new Instructor for the next few weeks, Frauke “Kay” who also speaks German!
The first day I just went for fun dives with Kay as I haven’t been diving for more than 1.5 years and she also wanted to see how I am in the water. Before we did the back roll entry, which I haven’t done before, I was a little bit nervous but once I was in the water, it felt great and I couldn’t wait to descend.
Right the next day I started with my Gili Air Divemaster Internship. First, Emergency First Response Course, which was super fun and still really informative. After that, we started right with the Rescue Diver Course since it has a lot to do with EFR.
It was super fun learning how to save people in need and how to help Divers during a panic attack or feeling stressed. The most fun part was when I had to save Andy and Hery, performing rescue breaths, removing gear, towing back to shore, exiting the water or calm them down while panicking! Both of them are Staff here so it was really fun getting them to know a little by practising the rescue with them!
After successfully passing the final exam I took a day off to relax a little and enjoy the island. Rescuing people needs a lot of strength and is exhausting! ?
So the next day, I was super fit again and ready for the Gili Air Divemaster Internship training!
This week we already did some skills in the pool and some workshops. For example I got the pleasure to assist on a Discover Scuba Diving course with really nice customers! First they got a training session in the pool where they learned 4 skills (how to clear a regulator, how to recover the regulator and how to clear a mask) and afterwards we went for two dives at two different dive sites.
Since the 3 DSD students were really good with their buoyancy, it was lots of fun to watch over them and showing them the great sea creatures. Especially, one customer really wanted to see turtles, so we went to Turtle Heaven and of course we found a few! We were also able to show them white tip reef sharks, pufferfish, razorfish, clownfish, boxfish, moray eels and many many more!
It was a super nice experience and everyone had a really good time!
My first week as a divemaster trainee was super fun and I learned a lot and I am excited for the next coming weeks!
