This week in Amed, another « odd creature » from the warm waters of Indonesia, the Longhorn Cowfish, aka Lactoria Conuta for the Latin lovers. It gets its name from the obvious Horns that protrude from the front of its head. This variation can measure up to 46 cm.
Our fun divers love this fish, sadly aquariophiles too; it became increasingly popular as a pet in the last few years.
These omnivorous animals can be found in various places such as coral reefs in lagoons, on reef flats and on protected seaward reefs; Amed area is therefore a fertile place for them.
If under severe stress, the Longhorn Cowfish can secrete deadly toxin, ostracitoxin, an ichthyotoxic, hemolytic, heat-stable, non-dialyzable, non-protein poison in the mucous secretions of their skin. Nothing to be scared of if we maintain proper environmental habits, as we do at Two Fish Divers.
