This week in Lembongan… The condition around the islands has been very still, allowing us many trips to the manta dive sites. While Eanna was practicing his guiding at Manta Bay, they were finishing up their safety stops, when instructor Rowan, spotted in the distance, one manta ray approaching. This was quickly followed by another and another, with a total of 7 manta rays passing by to feed.
Rowan was able to spot the school of manta rays in the distance, because the conditions have been great over the last week. With average visibility sticking around 20 meters, spotting these beautiful creatures has been almost easy. Although not always around, these creatures use the two manta dive sites for feeding or cleaning. It does come down to a bit of luck though as these creatures have to keep swim or they will sink. This means that they are always moving, even when they are feeding or being cleaned they are still moving. This movement during feeding provides some amazing sights, with these creatures moving in a small area, passing back or forward or barrel rolling.
We have also seen other creatures under the water this week. Bamboo sharks are also often spotted hiding under the rock formations at Manta Bay and Manta Point. The sandy bottoms tucked in around the reef, also provide a resting spot and camouflage to another type of ray. May blue spotted sting rays can often be spotted passing by or tucked in the sand with just their eyes poking out.
Oooh, we’ll be there next week! Paul Harris!!
