My name is Rosa and I am the new Divemaster trainee at Two Fish Divers Bunaken; I was born in Madrid, and I am what they call an “Indo-junkie” – I just can’t get enough on this beautiful country! A year ago I decided to leave my boring office job in Switzerland and buy a one-way ticket out of Europe, and of course my first stop was Indonesia.
Getting my PADI Open Water license had been on my mind for some time, and exactly a year ago I made the dream come true in Lovina, in the northern coast of Bali. I fell in love with diving as soon as I put my head in the water, and I’ve been lucky to explore some of the most amazing dive sites in the world over the past year: I dived with mantas in Komodo, with sea lions and mola molas in the Galápagos, I explored shipwrecks off the coast of Cuba, cenotes in Mexico, and I fell in love with the coral walls of Bunaken.
Somewhere along the way, I decided to take things one step further and get my Divemaster certification, and since I love Indonesia below sea level just as much as I love it on firm ground, I had no doubt that I wanted to do my Divemaster Traineeship here. First I went to Two Fish Lembongan to be trained as a Rescue Diver with Anna and Dani and then I came over to Bunaken, my favorite little island in Indonesia, to begin my Divemaster adventure with Ilse and Sam.
My typical day starts loading the boat with the dive equipment needed for the morning dives (which is a fantastic workout since my gym membership expired a year ago…), and then we all sit together for breakfast. If I’m not on the boat that day helping our guests explore the wonderful underwater world around Bunaken, I’ll spend time in the pool practicing different skills, or assisting Ilse and Sam with courses, giving a hand at the equipment room, or reading up on diving theory. In the evening, we relax with a cold Bintang and play guitar and get ready for a new day of diving. Every day is different, and I definitely feel like I’m learning and improving every day. There’s definitely no time to get bored in Bunaken!
When I’m not diving and I’m not busy translating (which is what I do for a living), you’ll find me singing (very, very badly) alongside our very musically talented Bunaken team, or trying to learn a few more words in Indonesian, or dancing salsa, or eating mountains of tempeh, which I adore. I’ll be in Bunaken for another month and I look forward to sharing more stories with you soon!
