Why would anyone go night diving in Gili Air? Maybe you think that it’s cold, all the fishes are sleeping and it’s dark? It’s not true! Night diving in Gili Air is an awesome experience not to be missed!
When you first enter the water it’s actually usually warmer than the air at night! While some fish do sleep, other species in the ocean come to life at night! That’s why when you go night diving in Gili Air you’ll see an entirely different range of marine life than what you spot during the day.
Have you tried night diving before? If you are planning to take your Advanced Open Water course with us, one of the options we offer is night diving! You’ll learn the basics and you’ll make an awesome night dive using an underwater light which lets you focus on the most important things and you’ll also learn how to communicate underwater in the dark. During day dives it’s easy to miss out on some of the most exquisite smaller critters because you are so engrossed in the entire reef scene. Night diving is much more focused and you’ll be amazed by what you find. Some of the highlights of night diving in Gili Air include ornate ghost pipefish (below), parrotfish sleeping in their bubbles of spit (!) and the older and younger Warty Frogfishes in the picture above.
Night DIving in Gili Air & Advanced Open Water
Our instructors always feel lucky when PADI Advanced Open Water course students choose a night diving in Gili Air as one of their five Adventure Dives! There is nothing better than hunting for all of the unique critters which are hidden through the day. Evelina and Alessio, our two brand new Advanced Open Water divers, enjoyed discovering really special creatures at night. Among them were Boxer Shrimp, Ornate Ghostpipefish, Warty Frogfish, Longarm Octopus, a Bobtail Squid, Pancake Nudibranches and so many more. Did you know that we can even spot mandarin fish here!
But the best thing about night diving in Gili Air is that we can just put on our equipment at the dive center and walk to our beautiful house reef. Believe us, it’s an underwater party – even at our safety stop when we wave our hands and enjoy the bioluminescence of the Plankton at night.
