What does Nitrox do and how does it work?
The primary benefit for using enriched air whilst diving is that you are exposed to less nitrogen than when you go diving with air. Enriched air means that, literally, the air is enriched – with additional oxygen. As you increase the percentage of oxygen in your tank you correspondingly decrease the percentage of nitrogen.

Increase your allowable bottom time with enriched air nitrox
What’s the benefit for Underwater Photographers?
One is to extend your no stop time (no decompression time) during your dives, so you get longer dive times, especially at depth. You can also use this advantage to make longer repetitive dives.
For underwater photographers who have found that special marine species they have been waiting to shoot they want to be able to take their time and line up their shot without having to worry about overstaying the limits. It’s common also in underwater photography to get back on the boat and realise your images maybe didn’t turn out as well as you’d hoped – so a repetitive dive that allows you to stay that bit longer is great for giving it a second go.

Taking the perfect shot can take time
Another advantage is that as you have less nitrogen in your body, you have less to “off-gas”, meaning that shorter surface intervals are allowed.
When your diving in somewhere, such as the Lembeh Strait, where the macro underwater photography opportunities are endless you might want to make 4 dives in the same day plus have time to get ready for a night dive. In this case, being able to have shorter surfaces intervals will allow you to do so. More time in the water getting those National Geographic images and less time on the boat!
Finally, for those who dive with air profiles on the computers, they are increasing their safety margins.
For underwater photographers who are shooting shallow water species such as those found on the beautiful reef tops around Bunaken and South Lombok. They can make incredibly long dives, increase their safety margins by making dives with regular air profiles.

For shallow water photographers nitrox allows longer or increased safety
