Are we teaching orang-utans to dive underwater in Bunaken? Not just yet, but we’ve been spotting plenty of orangutan crabs (picture by Alex Schade) this week. And what a busy time it has been, thanks to an Indonesian bank holiday. Instructors and dive guides got plenty of in-water time and all of our boats were called on, too. The result? Lots of smiling divers and many congratulations all around as we’re adding more certified divers to the underwater world.
How old do you have to be to learn to dive? Not old at all! In fact, this week, our youngest newbie diver was only nine years old. Emily completed a Bubblemaker session in shallow water, while her older brother and two friends became certified Junior Scuba Divers. This will allow them to go on dives to 12 m guided by a professional on their next holidays. And when they’re ready, it’s only a quick couple of days to complete the full PADI Open Water course.
Many of our students this week came from Indonesia itself, using the bank holiday for a vacation or just a long weekend. We hope to see them again for fun dives in the near future.
And what did our fun divers get up to? They saw plenty of small creatures, including ornate ghost pipefish, who seem to enjoy hanging out on Bunaken’s walls at the moment. Due to plenty of plankton, we’ve also had larger schools of fish joining us on dives, including black snappers, long-jawed mackerel and trevallies.
As things are quietening down a littl this coming week, we can’t wait to see what the water has in store for us.
