It’s been a fantastic past few weeks here in Bunaken. I did eventually conquer my ear infection, and since then we’ve been diving just about every day on my Divemaster course – heaps of diving!
There’s so much life in the waters around Bunaken – the biodiversity is truly incredible. We’ve got all kinds of macro life in the corals… and plenty of pelagic life out in the blue as well. One minute you can be squinting your eyes, looking at a little pygmy seahorse, and the next minute your eyeballs are popping out of your head when a big school of trevally cruise by. Anything is possible here… last night at sunset, I watched an eel attack an octopus. The day before that… eagle rays soaring with turtles. Today we watched a huge pod of dolphins swim by, just in front of the resort. Each day is different and you never know what you might encounter here.
I’ve been making lots of progress through the PADI Divemaster program – practicing all the necessary skills in and out of the pool, assisting instructors with student courses, mapping out commonly-visited dive sites, formulating emergency action procedures, learning how to make equipment repairs, practicing guide work above and below the surface, and my favorite… simulating Discovery Scuba Programs. Pretty soon I’ll be a certified PADI divemaster, but I’ve still got lots of learning to do. The fun never stops when you’re diving in Bunaken!
