PADI Rescue Diver in Bunaken (By Juri….)
Veronika and I spent our first days at Two Fish to do our PADI Rescue Diver in Bunaken before moving on to the PADI Divemaster course. We have learned a lot and had a really fun time in the various rescue scenarios, but let me start from the beginning…
Our first day we started with the Emergency First Response training which covers the general basics of dealing with accidents, providing first aid and life support. We went through multiple emergency role-play scenarios with our diving instructor Maia followed by open discussions and knowledge reviews. This was already really interesting and Maia had all the emergency equipment including “Annie” the emergency training dummy ready for us.
Saving Annie’s life makes us hungry and we had an amazing dinner and a good night’s rest to take on the next diving related rescue training in the amazing swimming pool that the Two Fish Bunaken resort is famous for.
The pool sessions, such as helping a tired, panicking or unresponsive diver provided a really good preparation for the scenarios we conducted in open water. It is really good to practice with full diving gear on in the sea with slight current and waves, as this is the best way to simulate a real diving accident.
Even though the topic of how to handle an emergency situation and potentially saving someone’s life is very serious and generally deserves more attention among the diving community, we also had a lot of fun during our training.
How do you escape a panic diver’s grip trying to climb on top of you at the surface and help the person to become positively buoyant? With most skills, the best thing to do first is Stop, Think and the Act!
We are really happy that we have taken on this challenge to become safer drivers and know how to help others. Even though I hope I will never have to use the rescue skills because of anticipating problems before they become a real emergency situation I now feel much more comfortable diving. (Knocking on the bamboo wood table as I am writing this)
We will keep you updated on our PADI Divemaster training but now it’s time for me to chat with the other fellow divers in the resort at the dinner table about another amazing day of diving the walls of the Bunaken Marine Park!

I hope the DM training is going well. I can imagine the resort is quiter than ever. I managed to get home okay on March 12th, after spending 6 nights in Lembeh after Bunaken. But I would not have minded being stuck on an island in Indonesia. Enjoy the rest of your training and time out from work.
