This week in Bunaken… Dive guide Oke learned that attitude sometimes comes in small packages and that you should not pick fights with boxer crabs. During a dive Oke found a very pretty boxer crab that he pointed out to his divers. Normally boxer crabs are quite elusive and shy, but not this guy! He raised his little pom-poms (which actually are anemones held in their claws) and rushed towards Oke’s finger! Anyone ever been stung by an anemone know to stay clear of them and Oke quickly withdrew his finger. His divers got a good laugh, cause how can anyone be scared of a crab with pom-poms, right!? Thank you Phil Clarke for the great photo!
We have definetely noticed that busy season is here and most days there have been three boats out. It has mainly been fun divers who have enjoyed some nice drifts dives with currents that have brought in some of the big guys; large tunas and giant trevallies, eagle rays and chunky black tip reef sharks.
There have also been plenty of students either enhancing their under water skills with continuing education courses or brand spanking new divers completing their PADI Open Water course and PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience. One of them was Andrea from Switzerland. She is the girlfriend of our DMT Carmelo and has joined him here in Bunaken for the last two weeks of his stay with us. She had never snorkeled before and gets very easily seasick so she never thought that diving could be anything for her. But when in Rome, right? She first tried it in the pool and found it much easier (and MUCH less scary) than she expected so she decied to go out on a dive with instructor Ina. We picked Muka, the dive site right in front of the dive centre, to make sure the boat ride was as short as possible and Andrea couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw what lies under the surface. A huge smile on her face that only turned in to fear once when Ina by mistake kicked her leg and she was certain it was a big shark!
We are very happy to welcome a new DMT this week; Sas from the UK. Sas has already spent two weeks at Two Fish in Lembongan and is now here to finish her course. As I write this she is busy writing her own blog so keep an eye out for it!
