This week in Bunaken… With the new year still young we got a reminder that it is more important than ever to look after our oceans and the amazing creatures who call it their home. Cara and Tarn from Australia enjoyed a dive with plenty of turtles around as usual here in Bunaken. Cara spotted a big turtle that was just about to take a big bite out of a jelly fish. The only problem was that the jelly fish was a plastic bag floating around in mid-water!
Luckily Cara was very quick and grabbed the bag right in front of the surprised turtle’s eyes. He probably thought her very rude for stealing his lunch, but she most likely saved his life! The turtles of Bunaken thanks you, Cara!
Every year thousands of endangered turtles die from eating plastic bags, mistaking them for jelly fish. For the love of our turtles; let one of your New Year’s resolutions be to use less plastic bags and to dispose properly of the ones you do use. If you see one during a dive, pick it up! It might only be a drop in the plastic ocean, but it’s one bag less that may end up in the stomach of a turtle or other amazing creature of the sea.
With it being rainy season (it doesn’t rain all the time, promise!) we have been fairly quiet here in Bunaken. Patricia from Canada found this actually suiting her perfectly. “I love to not only see lots of fish, but to actually take my time and watch their behavior. With other people in the group this is not always possible, but being just me and the guide I could spend all the time I wanted with just one little shrimp. It was great!” Hitting what is considered low season might give you exactly the dives you want!
We waved goodbye to our two DMTs; Wim and Georgia this week. Wim finished his PADI Divemaster course (BIG congratulations!!) and Georgia went to Two Fish in Lembeh to wrap up the last of her course there. Good luck and hope to see all you guys back here soon!
