We might not have been hunting for Easter eggs or chocolates, but we’ve been lucky enough to spot plenty of pygmy seahorses and ornate ghost pipefish around Bunaken this week. It’s definitely been a week for macro photography fans (thanks for the picture, Alex Schade) with our guides spotting numerous pregnant Pontohi Pygmy and Severn’s seahorses as well as ornate ghost pipefish all around the island.
As if pygmy seahorses and ornate ghost pipefish during the first few dives following your PADI open water course weren’t enough, our guest Zach did one better! During his Adventure Night Dive with Yvonne, they spotted a blue-ringed octopus right on Lekuan III, one of our favourite dive sites. Here’s hoping Zach knows he’s being spoilt! Our photography fans enjoyed the ‘small stuff’ too and spent plenty of time hanging in the walls trying to take that perfect picture.
Out in the blue we’ve been spotting tuna hunting their prey, whilst large schools of long-jawed mackerel were looking for safety in numbers both on top of the reef and deeper down. The mackerel were interspersed by even larger groups of bluestreak fusiliers, which we could spot from about 30-40 meters away, thanks to sunlight reflecting off their bodies.
Just in time for Easter, it also looks like our rainy season has finished for now, leaving us with dry, hot & sunny days – just perfect to enjoy Bunaken’s underwater world.
