This has been a week since I arrived at Two Fish Divers as a Divemaster trainee. I first spent 4 days in Lembeh, a small island off the coast off north Sulawesi (another bigger island of Indonesia). It effectively means that I am at the EDGE of the world. It “only” took me 50 hours to get there. But man, it’s well worth it. It’s heaven. Here’s a cheesy sunset picture as teaser … but let’s backtrack a little bit…
Why the Divemaster course? A little over a month ago, I decided to quit my job in NYC to take a breather. While planning, I got interested into doing a 4-weeks divemaster training as Divemaster trainee. It seemed like the perfect way to spend a month in Asia doing something I love and learning new technical things (nerd alert). Aside from the obvious benefit of improving diving skills, I was also interested in the soft skills like leadership and being comfortable briefing people in a fun yet serious way. After all, you want to make sure that people get out of the water safely but also entertained. It’s just getting to the next level of understanding in diving and everything that goes with it.
Why Two Fish? I was researching dive centers in the Bali area (as in I pulled a list from PADI.com of all the 5 stars PADI IDC centers) and reached out to them all (nerd alert #2), I had a really good email exchange email with Bryce from Two Fish that made me feel that they were both really nice and very serious, also they have 6 dive centers in Indonesia and were the only one to offer the Divemaster training over several locations. Bryce came back to me with a proposed itinerary and off I went: Lembeh and Bunaken in Sulawesi, and Lembongan, close to Bali.
Back to Lembeh. Most divers coming there are super experienced and passionate about very small and rare marine life that you can find only in this very particular sandy volcanic bottom. It’s called muck diving. And it’s rich rich rich! It’s a great way for me to get acquainted to a new type of diving but also ease into the Divemaster, reading the theory book every afternoon. Off to a great start !
