This week in Bali we’ve been out to our regular sites at Tulamben, Padang Bai and Nusa Pendia and we got a seahorse surprise! We saw the common Seahorse in Crystal Bay, Nusa Pendia – a site usually famed for the larger residents – Mola-Mola! And at Tulamben we saw the Denise Pygmy seahorse (hippocampus denise).
This little creature is a really fascinating one, in the seahorse family it is a fact that it is the male seahorse that gives birth, yes you read that right! The female deposits her eggs in the males pouch where they develop into little minature replicas of the dad and mum before being born into the world. Another interesting fact on Seahorse is that they are dedicated partners and stay together for life.
Our guests Reehan and Sid from India were super happy with the macro finds on the USAT Liberty Shipwreck in Tulamben, in addition to the Denise Pygmy Seahorse (pictured) they also saw loads of new nudis, Great Barracuda, reef sharks, stingrays, garden eels and lots more!
Padang Bai waters are still a bit chilly at 20 degrees, but the Mola’s are around at some of the sites! Jim and Robin had a great day out at Nusa Penida thanks to the Mt Raung volcano erupting which closed Bali airport and messed up their travel plans… But all was not lost as they got to dive the famous Crystal Bay in Nusa Pendia, where they spotted the cheeky Common Seahorse as well as stingrays, huge starry puffer fish, stonefish and the awesome Picachu nudi!
