Meet Our Amazing Cook Johani!
I’m sure a famous diver once said “the way to a divers heart is through their stomach… and show them a seahorse, everyone loves seahorses”. Here on the dive farm, AKA Two Fish Divers South Lombok Resort we’ve had the pleasure of enjoying both this week.
Before I update you on the week’s goings-on here in South Lombok, please let me introduce to you one of our in house cooks, Johani (or Jojo). Jojo is from the local village of Dusun Berambang which is part of Desa Batu Putih in the Sekotong region where the dive shop is located. She is married with one lovely son and started working for Two Fish in July 2015, so has been with us for almost 5 years now! Before Two Fish, Jojo’s culinary experience started at home and grew into her first job at PT. Budaya Mutiara (the Pearl Farm) where she developed her craft as a member of the Kitchen Staff for 17 Years. We’re very appreciative of this dedication to cooking here at Two Fish as Johani can always be relied upon to rustle up some filling, post-dive local dishes such as Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, and my personal favourite, Nasi Campur (see last weeks blog for more on the food front). In her free time Jojo likes to visit the rice fields, feed her cows or rest at home for some quality family time. Jojo is always working on her English language skills so feel free to have a chat and a joke with Jojo when you visit (she’s also the team’s practical joker) and maybe you can learn some Indonesian while you share your language skills with her. Like many of our local staff, Johani has yet to travel outside of Indonesia but has visited Java and Jakarta, Jojo’s recommendation is Jakarta as the more exciting big city 🙂
As for Jojo’s hopes and dreams, like many Muslims around the world, Jojo would love to go to Mecca for the Hajj… fingers crossed we can make this happen one day!
As for this week at Two Fish South Lombok, we welcomed Alan and Franziska for some quality fun diving around the southern Gilis. Australian police diver Alan spent 5 days exploring the full variety of sites here (including a trip to Belongas Bay where they were checked out by a curious Mobula ray) and he especially enjoyed the white reef sharks of Jays Cathedral and Sunken Island. Franzisca on other hand is not (yet) a fan of the sharks but did do quite an impressive underwater dance for the sea horse, sexy shrimp and “wiggle bums” (juvenile many spotted sweetlips) on her dives around the local Gili Islands 🙂
Finally, a note on the coronavirus… you’re probably already well aware of the global impact this is having on travel, tourism and businesses generally. Thankfully we’ve yet to see any cases so far here in the Lombok and travel is not restricted across Indonesia at this time. Indeed, the airlines have responded by slashing prices and we have our own huge discounts on offer to divers who can make it here. We are definitely diving and, of course, we are taking the threat of this virus seriously and have established increased hygiene standards on board the boats and within the dive centre.
For those of you already in the region, please feel free to visit us and see the magical reefs of the Southern Gilis for yourself… for those of you who can’t make it right now, we have amended our cancellation policy to defer pre-booked dive trips until a later date and we very much look forward to welcoming you here for your much-needed dive fix when the situation is more normal again.
