This week in Belongas, South Lombok the eagle rays have been around in numbers once again. We have seen them almost all season but the numbers dropped during the peak months, it seems as though they have had enough of hiding and decided to show their beauty once again.
The eagle rays here in Belongas either hang around 35-40 meters or up at 15-10, it is unusual to see them at our deepest level of the dive 30 meters, so we either see them from below or from above. Both ways are just as magnificent as each other.
Other than the Rays we have had sightings of White Tip Reef Sharks, Red tooth Trigger Fish, Tuna, Blue fin Trevally, Mobula Rays, Clown Trigger fish, Bamboo Sharks and yes still some Hammerheads. During this week we have spotted at least one up to 7 on a dive.
As the waves are big the visibility is not so good ranging from 7-15 meters but still enough to see all the big pelagic from a distance.
As for the small creatures we have bumped into Harlequin Shrimps, Skeleton Shrimps, Painted Frog Fish, Ladybug Amphipods, nudie branch, Rock mover Wrasse, Porcelain Crabs and much more!
The temperature down here in South Lombok is ranging from 25-28ºc, nice, warm and still the chance to see some amazing things and experience diving like you’ve never experienced it before!
We have had the pleasure of some old friends joining us here in Belongas this week. Will and Mel (instructors) who we met in Sumatra rocked up in South Lombok to join us both for some macro in Sekotong and then Belongas for the Hammerheads and Mobula Rays.
It has been a pleasure and just goes to show that the diving world really is small.
