This week in Bunaken… Eagle rays are in general a fairly common sight here in Bunaken. In the beginning of the year we did however notice a dip in sightings, but they now seem to be back in numbers. They are seen on almost every dive at the moment! And considering how easy it is to just look on the reef walls for cool critters you can only imagine how many cruise by unnoticed behind us. It is always a great treat to have one of those large rays swim past with that cheeky looking face. They look like they just got away with some mischief!
The Easter weekend filled up the resort and the diving hasn’t disappointed with the bluest of blue water and calm seas. Not only have there been lots of eagle rays, but also plenty of reef sharks, a large marble ray and big pelagics like tunas and trevallies. Several frog fish has also been spotted as well as cuttlefish, orangutang crabs, octopus, pygmy seahorses and much more.
With the boats being fairly busy it has been great to see the amazing variety we’ve had onboard. Bubblemaker Nils, who you met last week, got hooked on the underwater world and spent three days diving with Ina and DMT Philippa exploring the shallows on top of the reef plateau. At the same boat tech divers Matt and Steph together with tech instructor Dom dived with their rebreathers and twin sets so we had dive depths between 2 and 50 m. And if that wasn’t enough, we had divers’ ages ranging from 8 years to 60+ (don’t worry Jennifer, I wont reveal your exact age!). Shows once again that diving is for everyone and that Bunaken suits all levels!
This week we have said farewell to our brand new PADI Divermasters Ross and Philippa. Good luck guys and hope to see you back soon!!
