This week, our team came out in force to participate in Trash Hero Amed’s largest ever beach clean-up! 105 people helped collect over 300 kgs of trash, much of it plastic that would otherwise have ended up in the sea (thanks to Mataboolan Photography for the picture). Needless to say, the beach in front of the dive centre looks pristine at the moment and we’ll make sure it stays this way. In other news, our IDC candidates are getting ready for their instructor exam and everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for them (not that they need it).
If you’ve never been to Amed, this is how to imagine the village – it’s really an accumulation of small fishing villages that stretches about 10 km along the north-east coast of Bali. ‘True’ Amed is the first of these villages and the region has simply become known as Amed.
Such a long village means that there are plenty of beaches to keep clean, starting right at our doorstep. The Trash Hero organisation has developed a system under which clean-ups rotate all along the coast every week, making sure beaches are cleaned regularly. This week, it was our turn right outside of the dive centre. We decided to send everyone that was not in the water to help out as well as sponsor the clean-up.
Little did we know that we’d be joined not only by some of the regulars, but also the staff from Surya Rainbow Villas, our resort base, many of our guests, a local women’s organisation and about 30 kids from a neighbouring village! Many hands make light work, and within an hour all of us had collected a record-breaking 300+ kgs!
Back in the dive centre, it’s been an atmosphere of concentration and preparation as our IDC candidates are getting ready for their Instructor Exam. With almost all of the in-water work behind them, they are spending a bit more time on theory before it’s all getting a bit serious on Saturday and Sunday.
Fancy doing your IDC in Amed? Easy to reach from Bali airport, whilst located in the ‘real’ Bali and with a great mixture of scenic and muck diving as well as the USAT Liberty shipwreck, it’s an ideal location. Get in touch to find out more!
