I have now reached my two weeks mark, which means I’m already halfway through my Divemaster training here at Two Fish Divers Bunaken and I never want to leave! I can’t believe time is running so fast.
At this moment everything is running smoothly with getting up early in the morning, loading the boats with tanks and scuba equipment and then off to either diving, assisting on courses or something else.
The past week I have had some pretty amazing experiences underwater. For a starter, Bunaken National Park is Turtle Heaven, which means that at some dive spots you lose count of the turtles. Then, on a deep dive scenario (a part of the DMT), we spotted three eagle rays. Absolutely stunningly and beautiful creatures. One of them even stayed for a little while beneath us swimming around.
Shark Sightings in Bunaken
We have also seen quite a lot of reef sharks in the past week, both juvenile white tip reef sharks as well as some adults from around 1.5-2 meters. Again, incredibly beautiful creatures.
Then, I had a remarkable experience the other day. We were out diving at Fukui, which is one of the only non-wall dive spots. I was diving around with another DMT, Maria, and we have only been in the water for around 10 minutes at 6 meters at a coral plateau when a big, beautiful Thresher Shark comes up from the deep blue. It was around 5 meters long, with its long and highly distinctive thresher shark tail almost taking up half of the length of the body. It had big, black eyes and was moving gracefully in the water, barely taking any notice of us. The Thresher Shark usually lives deep down, and seldom come up to any depth where scuba divers can see them. This means they are a rare sight, and here in Bunaken they have only seen one in the past year. We were extremely lucky, and of course, we didn’t have a camera with us to take a picture – so the dive guides obviously didn’t believe us. Though, they joked that they will dive at Fukui every day now, just to see if they got lucky with a Thresher Shark. That was just one of those moments that you will always remember and have as a special memory.
When you have such an amazing time underwater, you literally forget the early mornings and the work you have to do before you can go out diving. It just becomes a minor step on the way onto all the fun you will have underwater. So, the past week has been pretty amazing, and I can’t wait to experience what next week will bring.
