The ocean is an amazing place, not only beautiful and fascinating with strange behaviours between the inhabitants but here in South Lombok we also have unicorns!
A member of the surgeonfish family (Acanthuridae), the unicornfish (Naso) is so-called because of it’s “rostral protuberance”, that’s a horn coming out of its forehead. We often see these fish in around the reefs where they eat algae, sometimes in schools or pairs, they usually cruise on by in the currents in the search for their next meal. Unicornfish are regarded as “good eating” locally so it’s good to see their stocks at a healthy level here where the pressures of overfishing haven’t taken their toll as they have in other parts of the world. Here at Two Fish South Lombok we much prefer to see unicornfish in the sea than on our plates!
In other news from our South Lombok resort, the occasional rain showers have made it lush and green here (on the dive farm!), making it almost as interesting to go critter spotting on land as much as it is underwater. We’ve also had the pleasure this week of upgrading Etienne’s Scuba diver cert to the full PADI Open Water Diver certificate, well done Etienne! We also welcome our new PADI Divemaster Intern Patric to the farm and are looking forward to getting staff member Di in the water for his Open Water certification too – watch this space for more updates!
