Week 3 of Eco Divemaster Internship now in Bunaken

The third week of my internship has been a busy one. On Friday afternoon upon the return from my morning fun dives, it was time for me to get my transfer to Bunaken where I would spend my remaining two weeks.

On my first morning here I was getting right into the nitty gritty of what it is to be a divemaster. Rendi (a staff member training to be a guide) was taking his open water course and today was his open water dive one and two, where I had to assist his Instructor Dion. Fortunately Rendi is a natural so it was an easy introduction to open water courses for me.

This week I also conducted my first Scuba Review with a guest who hadn’t dived in 5 years. I was a bit nervous but Dion was right behind the student, giving me instructions in scuba sign language. Again, I was lucky to get an excellent student who did almost every skill perfectly first time, and even managed to see a turtle on the dive!

Here in Bunaken I have also started doing dive briefings before every dive. This divemaster skill is harder than it seems, especially when you have never dived the dive sites. But like in Lembeh, all the staff are very keen to help me and give me very accurate and specific descriptions on what the dive site looks like and what we can expect to see.

Yesterday I took my skills assessment and completed my 100m diver tow, both of which I passed…..phew! I have also finished my first of two written exams, only getting one question wrong. Not too much left to do now.
