This week in Bunaken… Going between dive sites might not be the most exciting part of a dive day, but this week the divers were treated to something special when a small pod of pilot whales made an appearance and swam alongside the boat for a few minutes! A couple of days later a pod of dolphins put up a great show with jumps high out of the water on the way from the dive site Siladen.
So the surface intervals has been putting on a great show, but the under water world has not disappointed either. Even though it has been full moon combined with equinox which has brought in extreme tidal changes we have enjoyed barely any currents. That luxury combined with blue, crystal clear water has made the diving absolutely stunning. Sightings have included big giant trevallies and tunas, schools of kingfish and mackerel as well as awesome little pygmy seahorses and weird crustaceans. Today on Lekuan II the divers had a cute school of long fin batfish cruising by and Maggie from the UK snapped the great photo above.
On the instructing side of things we had some PADI Advanced and PADI Enriched Air students. Our DMT Phillippa completed her Shark Specialty course and instructor Dion could relax when they found several reef sharks on both the dives. It is always a bit nerve racking to teach courses specialised in a certain marine creature cause it’s not always nature cooperates. No guarantees!
Both DMTs Phillippa and Ross have been busy bees this week and are flying through their courses. Being an avid UK diver Ross still struggles a bit with taking in how much fish we actually have here 🙂 Keep an eye out for their blogs about their experiences as DMTs.
