White Tip Reef Sharks and Big Stuff…
The “big stuff” is what hooks most people into becoming a diver and it’s the small stuff that usually keeps them diving when they start to learn how amazing and complex the underwater world is. Here in South Lombok we have an abundance of the small stuff and although we may not get constant visits from mola mola or mantas, we do, however have seasonal hammerheads and we have our own resident white tip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus). Although quite common, white tip reef sharks are regarded as “Near Threatened” due to overfishing for their meat and fins as well as by-catch from damaging fishing practices. In Lombok our whitetip reef sharks are often on the larger side, a good indication that they’re growing to a good age and feeding well on our biodiverse reefs. You can see them on one of our deeper dives (25-30m) such as Jays Cathedral, where the white tip reef sharks cruise on the currents around a coral-encrusted ridge or sleeping the day away under one of the many ledges.
The weather is still VERY dry here in Lombok, we’re actually longing for some rain after nearly 4 months with none. The dive team are using the quieter time to do the annual servicing of our dive equipment and our boat Dua Ikan is due for some upgrades with more storage options making it an even more comfortable place to enjoy the surface intervals. Amongst the fun divers we’ve also had a couple joining us to enter the world of diving with their open water certification and Bubble is still on point as our “terrifying” dive farm guard puppy 🙂
