A wreck dive is not so common around Bunaken as the walls tend to drop to depths way beyond the recreational dive limit. Any wreck that may exist around our island would be too deep to explore. Though this week we have return guests Chris and Darren from the UK in house, who have visited multiple times already.
They remembered a wreck dive on one of their previous trips and were keen to go check it out once more. After a quick chat with our other guests, it became clear that all were excited to visit the wreck and so off we went to explore the Molas ship wreck, which is thought to be a Dutch merchant ship that has sunk around 1942.
Lucky for us, it sits upright making it easy to navigate and allowing divers to get a good look at it by being able to swim around it entirely. The top of the wreck is around 20 M deep and the propeller at the stern is around 40M, making it a relatively deep dive. We offer enriched air fills and of course the enriched air diver course for those that aren’t nitrox certified yet. Which is what most of the guests requested for their exploration of the wreck.
After running low on no deco time, the dive continues on an upward slope which offers some coral and sandy bottom in which various critters like to hide. Like ribbon eel, pipe fish, bubble coral shrimps, Orang Utan crabs, and different kinds of nudibranchs. We had very happy guests at lunch that day!
Whilst the advanced divers were off on the wreck dive, our instructors were busy teaching Jon from Denmark his advanced open water and nitrox courses. Koushik from India learned how to dive from our colleague Rachel from Lembeh whilst our instructors Sam and Ilse took a quick break.
Upon return to the island, Ilse was able to continue training with Koushik and completed his advanced course. Sam is back in classroom with Philip and Simon from Switzerland who will be completing their open water course in the upcoming days.
All in all, plenty going on over here on Bunaken. The weather remains sunny and the seas continue to be flat, for now still excellent diving conditions, so what are you waiting for? Come and join us for some amazing diving!
