Bali Explorer: The East Bali Dive Safari

4 nights Amed + 3 nights Nusa Penida. Two world-class dive destinations, one unforgettable week.

Two Bali Dive Worlds, One Safari

There’s nowhere else on earth where you can dive pristine coral walls in the morning and hunt pygmy seahorses on volcanic black sand in the afternoon. The Amed–Penida corridor is East Bali’s signature dive experience, and Two Fish Divers is the only operator with its own resorts at both ends.

Amed shore reefs delivers 40-metre vertical walls draped in soft coral, with green turtles on every dive and visibility that regularly exceeds 30 metres. Three hours by road and boat, Nusa Penida is a completely different world — Bali’s megafauna capital of the planet, where volcanic slopes attract Manta Rays and Mola.

Most divers do one or the other. This safari gives you both.

The Two Destinations

Amed — Vibrant reefs, muck diving & the world famous Tulamben Wreck

tulamben-ship-wreck-liberty

Amed shore reefs is one of Indonesia’s oldest protected marine areas, and it shows. The walls here drop from the shallows to well beyond recreational limits, covered in sea fans, sponges, and soft corals that glow in the afternoon light.

What you’ll see:

  • Calm conditions, vibrant reefs, and diverse marine life that is great for both beginners and experienced divers.
  • Some great wrecks – the world-fanous USAT Liberty wreck in Tulamben. The Japanese Shipwreck covered in coral.
  • Our house reef for afternoon & night dives.
  • Macro critters on black sand slopes that photographers fly across the world to shoot – frogfish, nudibranchs, blue-ring octopus, seahorses and more.

The diving: Depth 5–40m | Visibility 25–40m | Water temp 27–29°C | Gentle current

Your base: Two Fish Dive Center Amed — resident dive center at Amed Beach Resort that offers beachfront rooms. Most dive sites are 10-20 minutes from the dive center, and our house reef offers an amazing macro muck dive option.

Nusa Penida — Amazing reefs and home to Bali's Manta's & Molas

Diving Nusa Penida Bali

Nusa Penida offers reefs full of vibrant corals and teeming with underwater life. It is also home to the famous Manta’s of Bali, and during the season of July to October divers will also encounter the strange Mola Mola, the gentle sunfish that can reach 1,000kg and 2m+ wide!

What you’ll see:

  • Manta rays cruise past cleaning stations year-round.
  • From July to November, the Great Sunfish (Mola Ramsayi) rise from the deep into diveable depth at sites you can reach in minutes from shore.
  • The reef walls drop into blue water alive with sharks, turtles, and coral diversity that ranks among the best in the Coral Triangle.

The diving: Depth 5–40m | Visibility 15–30m | Water temp 18–28°C | Strong, unpredictable currents (Drift)

Your base: Two Fish Dive Center Nusa Penida — beachfront dive center with nearby accommodation options. A few dive sites in front of the center but most dive sites are 10-20 minutes from the dive center.

Is This Safari Right for You?

This Safari Is for You If:

  • You can hold good buoyancy without touching the bottom, you're ready. Some of the diving in Amed needs good buoyancy — hovering above sand in Amed near fragile creatures - and being able to maintain your position in the drifts of Nusa Penida.
If you struggle to hold good bouyancy then make sure to book the Amed as your first stop so you can master bouyancy before Nusa Penida - you can make doubly sure by doing the PADI Peak Performance Bouyancy course in Amed.
  • Want two completely different dive styles in one trip - pristine walls AND mucking on volcanic slopes!
  • Prefer small, friendly resorts over big hotels (max 16 guests in Nusa Penida and 24 guests in Amed).
  • This Safari Is NOT for You If:

  • You're looking for your first dive or Open Water course — check our courses instead - a popular choice is the Open Water course in Amed followed by a trip to Nusa Penida afterwards.
  • You want nightlife and busy beaches — Nusa Penida and Amed are remote island resorts
  • You need luxury 5-star hotel standards — our resorts are comfortable but simple dive resorts
  • Getting to East Bali

Bali’s Denpasar Airport (DPS) has direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, and Singapore. From the airport, Amed is about 90 minutes by road and boat. Nusa Penida is about 90 minutes by road via Bitung harbour, then a 5-minute boat crossing.

We can arrange all airport transfers and the Amed–Penida transfer for you. If your flight times require an overnight in Bali, we’ll book a hotel and arrange the pickup the next morning.

Coming from Bali? The flight is about 3 hours. Add our Amed, Penida, or Sanur diving to make it a full Indonesia dive safari.

    Q&A

    Frequently Asked Questions

Sanur is a day-trip hub, not a multi-night dive base — people stay in Sanur and take day trips to dive locations elsewhere in Bali such as Amed or Nusa Penida. Bali Explorer is a multi-night safari where you stay at the dive base. If you want the day-trip product, see diving from Sanur — that’s a different shape of trip.

Both locations dive year-round. Manta rays are present at Penida year-round but most active April–November. Mola mola peak July–October at Penida (cooler thermoclines). Amed has stable conditions all year. The trip works whether you book December or August.

No — this is the safari we recommend for new divers. Amed first lets you get comfortable on shore dives with the Liberty wreck. Penida currents are managed by site selection — we keep newer divers on the calmer sites and the experienced divers on the deeper drift sites.

Yes. We can add 3–4 days at the start in Amed for the Open Water course – the Liberty wreck can be your final OW dive! – followed by 3-4 days in Nusa Penida. Pricing on request.

Both Amed and Penida have strong non-diver experiences — beach time, snorkelling, day trips. Pricing on request.

2–3 months ahead is comfortable. For July–October Penida (peak mola season), book 4–6 months ahead — we limit numbers to keep dive groups small.

Yes — both locations are camera-friendly. Amed is strong on macro (pygmy seahorse, frogfish, nudibranch). Penida is wide-angle territory (mantas, mola). Rinse tanks and charging stations at both bases.

Yes — that’s our Ultimate Indonesia trip (13 nights, 4 locations). Ask us for a custom quote.
