Walls & Muck: The North Sulawesi Dive Safari

4 nights Bunaken + 3 nights Lembeh. Two world-class dive destinations, one unforgettable week.

Two Oceans, One Safari

There’s nowhere else on earth where you can dive pristine coral walls in the morning and hunt pygmy seahorses on volcanic black sand in the afternoon. The Bunaken–Lembeh corridor is North Sulawesi’s signature dive experience, and Two Fish Divers is the only operator with its own resorts at both ends.

Bunaken Marine Park delivers 40-metre vertical walls draped in soft coral, with green turtles on every dive and visibility that regularly exceeds 30 metres. Three hours by road and boat, Lembeh Strait is a completely different world — the muck diving capital of the planet, where volcanic slopes hide the rarest critters in the Indo-Pacific.

Most divers do one or the other. This safari gives you both.

The Two Destinations

Bunaken — Epic Walls and Turtles

Turtles in Gili Air

Bunaken Marine Park is one of Indonesia’s oldest protected marine areas, and it shows. The walls here drop from the shallows to well beyond recreational limits, covered in sea fans, sponges, and soft corals that glow in the afternoon light.

What you’ll see:

  • Green and hawksbill turtles — 20+ per dive is normal
  • Napoleon wrasse, barracuda schools, reef sharks
  • Pristine hard coral gardens on the wall tops
  • Eagle rays and reef sharks (occassional)

The diving: Depth 5–40m | Visibility 25–40m | Water temp 27–29°C | Gentle current

Your base: Two Fish Resort Bunaken — beachfront cottages, max 24 guests, pool, full board. Most dive sites are 10-20 minutes by boat.

Lembeh — World-class Muck Diving

Responsible Underwater Photographer | Two Fish

Lembeh Strait is the undisputed muck diving capital of the world. The volcanic black sand slopes are home to species found nowhere else in such concentration. For underwater photographers and critter hunters, it’s paradise.

What you’ll see:

  • Hairy frogfish, painted frogfish, giant frogfish
  • Pygmy seahorses (Bargibanti, Denise, Pontoh’s)
  • Mimic octopus, wunderpus, blue-ring octopus
  • Flamboyant cuttlefish, harlequin shrimp, nudibranchs

The diving: Depth 5–25m | Visibility 10–20m | Water temp 27–29°C | Calm current

Your base: Two Fish Resort Lembeh — private beach, sea-view cottages, max 16 guests, full board. Some dive sites are only 5mins by boat, the furthest 20mins.

Resort Lembeh

Your Week in North Sulawesi

Below is a sample schedule of a 7N safari package; we choose sites based on conditions, dive experience  and guest wish-lists. Other packages available, please contact us about your particular requirements, we will be happy to tailor a package to your needs!

Day 1

Arrive in Manado

Airport pickup, 90-min transfer to Bunaken resort. Settle in, equipment setup. First dinner at the resort with delicious buffet-style Indonesian dishes.

Day 2

Lekuan Walls & Turtles

Morning boat to a Lekuan site — the signature Bunaken wall. Sheer vertical drop, sea fans, barrel sponges, and turtles everywhere. Surface interval with snacks on the boat. Second dive at Muka Kampung. Back for lunch. Optional afternoon dive at Sachiko for passing pelagic and shoals of reef fish.

Day 3

Bunaken Timur & Beyond

Drift dive at Bunaken Timur — current-swept wall with pelagic visitors and some of the best corals in the park. Second dive at Siladen Island for a change of pace — gentle coral gardens, macro life, and pristine hard coral. Evening: night dive if conditions allow, or star-gazing from the beach.

Day 4

Bunaken Further Away

Drift dive at Mandarin & a gentle dive at Fukui - one of our few sloping coral sites with schools of fish circling around you. Free afternoon to explore or snorkel house reef.

Day 5

Transfer to Lembeh & Critter Hunting

Early transfer to our Lembeh resort. Two morning dives targeting the signature species — mimic octopus on the sandy flats, hairy frogfish on sponges, pygmy seahorses on gorgonian fans. Surface interval swapping finds with other divers. Add an afternoon dive for more critters or a night dive for the nocturnal life, or even both.

Day 6

Lembeh — More Critter Hunting

By day 3 your eyes are getting adjusted to muck diving, and you start to discover your own critters — nudibranchs, shrimps on anemones, juvenile fish hiding in coral rubble. Another afternoon dive or a dusk dive for mating mandarinfish. Review photos with the guides and other guests, and plan tomorrow's diving.

Day 7

Lembeh — Macro Paradise

Last day for 2-3 more dives — Nudi Falls, Police Pier, Aer Bajo. Last chance for that mimic octopus shot!

Day 8

Depart

Breakfast, transfer to Manado airport (90 mins via Bitung harbour).

Is This Safari Right for You?

This Safari Is for You If:

  • You can hold good buoyancy without touching the bottom, you're ready. Muck diving needs good buoyancy — hovering above sand in Lembeh near fragile creatures.
If you struggle to hold good bouyancy then make sure to book the Bunaken as your first stop so you can master bouyancy before Lembeh - you can make doubly sure by doing the PADI Peak Performance Bouyancy course in Bunaken.
  • Want two completely different dive styles in one trip - pristine walls AND mucking on volcanic slopes!
  • Prefer small, friendly resorts over big hotels (max 16 guests in Lembeh and 24 guests in Bunaken).
  • This Safari Is NOT for You If:

  • You're looking for your first dive or Open Water course — check our courses instead
  • You want nightlife and busy beaches — Lembeh and Bunaken are remote island resorts
  • You need luxury 5-star hotel standards — our resorts are comfortable but simple dive resorts
  • Getting to North Sulawesi

Manado’s Sam Ratulangi Airport (MDC) has direct flights from Jakarta, Bali, and Singapore. From the airport, Bunaken is about 90 minutes by road and boat. Lembeh is about 90 minutes by road via Bitung harbour, then a 5-minute boat crossing.

We can arrange all airport transfers and the Bunaken–Lembeh transfer for you. If your flight times require an overnight in Manado, we’ll book a hotel and arrange the pickup the next morning.

Coming from Bali? The flight is about 3 hours. Add our Amed, Penida, or Sanur diving to make it a full Indonesia dive safari.

    Q&A

    Frequently Asked Questions

Our 7-night Classic package with 12 dives starts from IDR 17,275,000 per person twin share. See the full pricing table above, or contact us for a custom quote.

We recommend at least 50 logged dives, with Advanced Open Water certification. Lembeh’s muck diving rewards good buoyancy control over the sand slopes. Bunaken’s wall diving is accessible to all certified divers.

Yes, you can do the safari in either direction. We’ll adjust the transfer logistics.

North Sulawesi has good diving year-round. The driest months are April to October, but rain rarely affects diving conditions. Water temperature stays between 27-29°C throughout the year.

Yes — a lot of our guests combine North Sulawesi with diving in Amed, Nusa Penida, or both. We’ll arrange the internal flights and transfers. Contact us to build a custom multi-location itinerary.

We don’t rent cameras, but our guides are experienced at spotting critters and positioning photographers. If you’re bringing your own setup, we have rinse tanks and camera tables at both resorts.

Yes, Nitrox fills are available at both Bunaken and Lembeh for an additional charge. You’ll need a valid Nitrox certification.

Both resorts welcome non-divers. Bunaken has snorkelling on the house reef and island walks. Lembeh is more remote but has the beach and resort facilities. For partners who want more to do, consider starting or ending your trip with a few days in Bali.
