Asia's Best Wall Diving

Asian Diver magazine named Bunaken Best Wall Diving in Asia in 2004 — and it still is what wall diving is supposed to look like. Vertical coral walls dropping hundreds of metres into deep blue, painted with sponges and hard corals in every colour. Sea turtles so common you stop counting after the first morning. Visibility regularly exceeding 25+ metres. And dive sites so close to our resort that you’re underwater within 5 minutes of leaving the beach.

Bunaken Marine Park is a UNESCO-nominated site and one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems in the world. It’s been a protected national park since 1991. Diving here is diving in one of the last great reef systems on earth.

We run our own resort on Pangalisang Beach — small, full board, and right on the water. No long boat rides. No transfers from Manado. You wake up, walk to the boat, and within minutes you’re descending a wall that’s been growing coral for thousands of years.

This Location is Perfect For

Wall Diving Enthusiasts

Sheer vertical walls from 5m to beyond recreational limits, draped in sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals. Lekuan, Bunaken Timur, Sachiko — some of the most densely encrusted walls most divers will ever see. Visibility regularly 25m+.

Underwater Photographers

Turtles that allow close approach, walls covered in colour, pygmy seahorses to be found, and visibility that makes wide-angle shots effortless. The combination of subjects and water clarity makes Bunaken a photographer's dream.

Dive Holiday Seekers

Full board island resort, 3 meals a day, no logistics. Wake up, dive world-class walls, eat well, sleep to the sound of the ocean. Star-filled skies with no light pollution. This is a proper diving holiday.

Consider Elsewhere If…

On the Island, Inside the Marine Park

Most Bunaken diving is run from the Manado mainland — a 45-60 minute boat ride each way before you even get wet. We’re already on the island. Our resort sits on Pangalisang Beach, inside the marine park, with dive sites minutes from the boat.

What being island-based means for your diving:

  • 5 minutes to the wall. Dive sites like Lekuan and Sachiko are right off the island. No hour-long boat commute.
  • 3 dives a day, easily. Morning pair plus an afternoon dive. Night dives when conditions allow. You’re not losing time to transfers.
  • Full board, no logistics. Three meals a day, unlimited coffee and tea, everything taken care of. No searching for restaurants on a small island.
  • The island pace. Small resort, max 20–25 guests. Stars at night. The sound of the ocean. This is what a diving holiday should feel like.

25 years in Indonesia. PADI 5-Star. Max 4 divers per guide.

Your First 3 Days on Bunaken

Below is a sample schedule, we choose sites based on conditions, dive experience  and guest wish-lists.

Day 1

Arrive at the Island

Fly into Manado, transfer to the the harbour in Tiwoho (ti-wo-ho!) or Bahowo (ba-ho-wo), 20-30 minute boat crossing to Bunaken Island. Arrive at our resort on Pangalisang Beach, check-in & settle into your room. Optional afternoon dive on the nearby wall if you arrive in time. First dinner at the resort with delicious buffet-style Indonesian dishes.

Day 2

Lekuan Walls & Turtles

Morning boat to a Lekuan site — the signature Bunaken wall. Sheer vertical drop, sea fans, barrel sponges, and turtles everywhere. Surface interval with snacks on the boat. Second dive at Muka Kampung. Back for lunch. Optional afternoon dive at Sachiko for passing pelagic and shoals of reef fish.

Day 3

Bunaken Timur & Beyond

Drift dive at Bunaken Timur — current-swept wall with pelagic visitors and some of the best corals in the park. Second dive at Siladen Island for a change of pace — gentle coral gardens, macro life, and pristine hard coral. Evening: night dive if conditions allow, or star-gazing from the beach.

Add Lembeh — The Walls & Muck Safari

Bunaken is walls, turtles, and pristine reef. Lembeh, 2 hours away, is the polar opposite: black sand slopes, tiny bizarre critters, and some of the best muck diving on earth. The contrast between the two is one of diving’s great combinations.

Our Walls & Muck Safari packages combine both locations — 4 nights Bunaken + 3 nights Lembeh, with transfer included.

Add Bali — Fly Manado → Bali and continue with manta rays on Nusa Penida, the Liberty wreck in Amed, or both. We coordinate the full trip across locations.

Everything you need to know about Bunaken to help you book

Bunaken is a year-round destination. Visibility is best March–October (regularly 25+ metres). November–February brings slightly more rain but diving continues daily. Water temperature stays 27–30°C all year.
On a typical morning of 2 dives, 5–10 turtle sightings is normal. Bunaken Island is a nesting site for green and hawksbill turtles, so they're resident — not seasonal visitors. They're relaxed around divers and frequently allow close approach.
Yes. The walls start at 5 metres depth and several sites have gentle conditions. We regularly run Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water courses here, and we have a lovely 18m training pool. That said, some sites have current — your guide will always match the site to your experience level.
Our resort on Pangalisang Beach is a small dive resort, not a luxury hotel. Rooms are comfortable and clean, with options from garden rooms to private cottages. Some AC options are available, and all accommodation is full board with 3 meals/day included. It's quiet, remote, and perfect for a diving-focused holiday.
We recommend a minimum of 5 nights to properly experience the marine park. 7 nights is ideal — enough time to dive all the key sites, enjoy the island pace, and potentially add Lembeh to your trip.
Absolutely — it's our most popular multi-location combination. Lembeh is about 2 hours from Bunaken (boat-car-boat). Our Walls & Muck Safari handles all transfers and logistics.
No — we have full rental equipment. The water is warm year-round (27–30°C), so a 3mm wetsuit is fine. Nitrox is available for qualified divers.
WiFi is available at the resort but can be slow and intermittent — this is a remote island. The best connection an be found in our restaurant and beach cafe/relaxing area and we have added comfy sofa's for the guests to take advantage of this. Many guests find that disconnecting is part of the experience.
