Learn to Dive in Bali

PADI courses for complete beginners at our three dive centres in Bali. Everything from your first breath underwater to a certification you can use anywhere in the world.

Your first dive in Bali starts here

Bali is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive. Warm, clear water, with reefs a few minutes from shore. Turtles and reef sharks turn up on most dives.

Two Fish Divers is a PADI 5-Star Centre with three dive centres in Bali: Amed, Nusa Penida and Sanur. We’ve been teaching in Indonesia for more than 25 years and have taught over 15,000 people to dive. Classes are capped at 4 students per instructor, and often it’s just one or two.

There’s a course to match whatever you’re after, whether that’s a single day in the water or a full certification.

Already certified? We dive in five places across Bali and North Sulawesi, including the mantas at Nusa Penida and the walls at Bunaken. You can also see every course we run in Indonesia.

Which course is right for you?

Discover Scuba Diving

One day, no experience needed. You'll learn the basics in the pool with your instructor, then do two real dives on the reef. There's no exam and nothing to study beforehand. A good way to find out whether diving is for you.

From IDR 1,800,000

PADI Open Water

Three to four days, and the most popular diving course in the world. You'll cover the theory, practise skills in the pool, and do four dives in the sea. At the end you can dive to 18 metres anywhere in the world. It runs over four days in Amed and Sanur, three to four in Nusa Penida.

From IDR 5,850,000

PADI Advanced Open Water

Two days, five course dives at five real dive sites, for divers who are already certified. Diving to a maximum of 30 metres, two mandatory course dives cover deep diving skills and navigation skills, and you can pick three other course dives such as wreck diving or night diving. There's no exam.

From IDR 5,250,000

All courses include manuals, certification and dive computer rental. Dive insurance is included on beginner courses. Nothing else gets added at the end.

Two things you get after your course:

  • 10% off your Advanced Open Water course if you start it within two weeks of finishing your Open Water. You can use it at any Two Fish centre in Indonesia, not only the one where you certified.
  • 10% off fun diving for up to two days and four dives after your course (not offered after Discover Scuba Diving course).

Three locations, three different experiences

This is something no other dive centre in Bali can offer. We run courses at three locations across the island, so you can learn wherever suits your trip, or combine two for a fuller experience.

Amed: best for relaxed learning

A quiet fishing village on Bali’s northeast coast. Our dive centre and resort sit right on the beach, with a house reef you can walk into from shore. The pace is slower here, the water is calm, and you’re diving minutes after kitting up. Most of our students choose Amed.

  • Discover Scuba Diving: IDR 1,800,000
  • Open Water: IDR 5,850,000
  • Advanced: IDR 5,250,000
  • Best for: 3+ day stays, couples, anyone who wants a peaceful setting
  • You’ll see: turtles, reef fish, the USAT Liberty shipwreck in nearby Tulamben

Nusa Penida: best for bucket-list marine life

If you want to learn where the big animals are, this is the place. Manta rays, ocean sunfish in season, and steep walls and channels. Conditions are harder work, with stronger currents and cooler water. An option if you have time would be the Open Water course in Amed and your Advanced course in Penida.

  • Discover Scuba Diving: IDR 2,600,000
  • Open Water: IDR 6,850,000
  • Advanced: IDR 5,900,000
  • Best for: already visiting Penida, comfortable in the ocean, want megafauna
  • You’ll see: manta rays, mola mola (Jul–Nov), vibrant coral walls

Diving courses in Nusa Penida →

Sanur: best for short stays

In south Bali, Sanur works as a day-trip base: we take you by boat to sites like Padang Bai, Tulamben or Nusa Penida. It suits a tight schedule, or a trip where diving is only part of the plan.

  • Discover Scuba Diving: IDR 2,950,000
  • Open Water: IDR 7,850,000
  • Advanced: IDR 6,800,000
  • Best for: short trips, convenience, combining with Bali sightseeing
  • You’ll see: whatever the day-trip destination offers, from macro critters to mantas

What does a PADI course cost in Bali?

Course Amed Nusa Penida Sanur
Discover Scuba (1 day, 2 dives) IDR 1,800,000 IDR 2,600,000 IDR 2,950,000
PADI Open Water (3–4 days) IDR 5,850,000 IDR 6,850,000 IDR 7,850,000
PADI Advanced Open Water (2 days) IDR 5,250,000 IDR 5,900,000 IDR 6,800,000

What’s included in every course: PADI manuals and materials, certification card, dive computer rental, all equipment, and small-group instruction (maximum 4 students, often just 1–2). Dive insurance is included on beginner courses.

Why the price difference? Amed is cheapest because the dive sites are on the doorstep and there are no long boat rides. Sanur includes boat transfers to offshore sites. Nusa Penida sits between the two. The teaching is the same at all three.

What happens during a PADI course?

Never dived before? This is how the Open Water course runs. Timings are a guide: we work to your pace and to the conditions on the day.

Day 1

Theory and pool session

You'll cover the basics: how equipment works, how to equalise your ears, hand signals, and what to do underwater. Then you'll practise the key skills in the pool: breathing from your regulator, clearing your mask, and getting comfortable.

Days 2–3

Open water dives

Four dives in the ocean, building skills gradually. By dive three, you'll be swimming along the reef, pointing out fish to your instructor. By dive four, you're a certified diver.

Day 4

If you need it

Some people finish in three days, some prefer a fourth. We go at your pace whenever possible.

Group size: Maximum 4 students per instructor. We regularly run courses with just 1 or 2 students, which means more attention and more confidence in the water.

“Can I learn to dive if I’m not a strong swimmer?” Yes. You need to be comfortable in water, but you don’t need to be a fast swimmer. We’ll assess your comfort level on day one and work from there.

Why learn with Two Fish Divers?

We have been teaching people to dive in Indonesia since 2001, and Bali is where most of them start.

What that means for your course:

  • Small groups, always. Maximum 4 students per instructor, and often it is just one or two, so nobody waits their turn on a skill.
  • Three Bali locations. Learn in Amed, Nusa Penida or Sanur, whichever suits the trip you are already planning.
  • The full PADI pathway. Open Water through to Instructor, with a Course Director on staff, so there is somewhere to go if you catch the bug.
  • Our own boats and our own sites. You will not be sharing a dive site with forty other people.
  • Equipment included. Manuals, certification and dive computer rental are all in the course price, and dive insurance is included on beginner courses.

25 years in Indonesia. Over 15,000 people taught to dive. Max 4 students per instructor.

Common questions about learning to dive in Bali

A Discover Scuba Diving experience (1 day, two dives, no certification) starts from IDR 1,800,000. A full PADI Open Water certification (3–4 days) starts from IDR 5,850,000. Both prices are for Amed. See the full pricing table above for Nusa Penida and Sanur. All courses include equipment, materials and certification, and dive insurance is included on beginner courses.

The PADI Open Water course takes 3 to 4 days. Discover Scuba Diving is a single day. Advanced Open Water is 2 days. You can combine courses back to back, and many students go straight from Open Water into Advanced.

You need to be comfortable in water, but you don’t need to be a competitive swimmer. PADI requires a 200-metre swim (any stroke, no time limit) and 10 minutes of floating. We’ll work with you on the first day to make sure you’re comfortable before heading to deeper water.

All of them. In Amed the water is calm, the house reef is on the beach, and the village is quiet enough that you can concentrate on learning. It’s also the cheapest option. Nusa Penida is more challenging, but you get to see manta rays and maybe even mola mola on your training dives, and it’s a dramatic island well worth a visit in its own right. If you’re already staying in south Bali, Sanur is the best alternative, and you may be able to do training dives at both Amed and Nusa Penida, so you get the best of both worlds.

We recommend booking at least a few days ahead, especially during high season (July–October). Send us an enquiry with your dates and preferred location and we’ll confirm availability.

That’s what Discover Scuba Diving is for. Try it for a day with nothing committed. If you enjoy it, the DSD counts towards your Open Water certification, so the day isn’t wasted.
